Listening CDs for GCSE. pound;10 inc VAT and postage. Revilo, PO Box 71, Winchester. Tel: 01962 714520
Revilo is one of many cottage industry language publishers venturing into territory that would be uneconomic for the educational publishing giants.
The latest additions to their extensive list of cards and tapes are Last Minuters - a series of 30 pocket-sized cards for GCSE revision, and two CDs to prepare pupils for GCSE listening comprehension.
The aim is to encourage parents to purchase the cards for their children and at pound;3 a set the price is deliberately designed not be off-putting. My students would certainly find useful the cards dealing with pictures and symbols (a feature of the new GCSE), how to consult a dictionary and letter-writing. The cards will help weaker students to organise their revision, although they could go further, including, for example, more topic vocabulary and verbs.
The tapes are handy for revision at home or in the classroom. The CDs (covering topics such as au restaurant, les grandes vacances, au cinema, au camping) contain booklets of questions at foundationhigher level and will be helpful to students daunted by the idea of answering questions in the target language.
