Fit to drop

13th July 2001 at 01:00
A friend of the Diary was consorting recently with one of the team charged with shaping this autumn's Government White Paper on teachers.

The following teasers were floated: every sixth teacher in a primary school must be male; all new teachers must pass a fitness test as well as numeracy and literacy tests; every pupil will have to contribute 10p towards the cost of threshold payments; a new dress code for teachers. Was our leg being pulled?

A bottle of champers for the best reader's contribution to the rich mix of ideas informing government policy.
