Charles Clarke, Education Secretary and MP for Norwich South, and Ian Gibson, Labour MP for Norwich North, are best mates. They even sit beside each other at Norwich City football games.

So, tongues wagged when they sat at opposite sides of the stand in Norwich's recent 1-0 home win over Crewe Alexandra. Had Dr Gibson's leadership of opposition to top-up fees caused a split?

Dr Gibson says he had just taken the chance to have a drink in the chairman's box. He said: "The marriage is strained but there is not going to be a divorce."
