Philomena Byron is a treasured learning support assistant at St Joseph's RC primary school at Moorthorpe, South Elmsall, near Wakefield Otherwise known as "Phil", she started as a parent volunteer at this West Yorkshire primary when the youngest of her three children joined reception. According to deputy head Lesley Darren, she was so talented, hardworking and popular she was offered a job. "Phil is a superstar. She comes in during the holidays, helps with displays, makes things at home - often goes beyond the call of duty." Her wrk with special needs pupils is especially valued. One pupil has just won a Child of Achievement award with Phil's support.

Debbie Flood, a former teacher at St Joseph's, nominated Phil, saying she wished she could have whisked her away to her new school. "She works like a Trojan and everyone loves her."
