Friday Hero

7th September 2001 at 01:00
Steve Lawson is a maths teacher and sixth-form examinations secretary at North Leamington community school and arts college, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire Our first Friday Hero of term performed miracles throughout the last exam season - that's all year actually - coping calmly and efficiently with whatever problems cropped up. On one particular day last term there were 15 different exams, some of which "clashed" so students had to be minded until their next exam. "A lesser person might have become very irritated and impatient," says the staffroom letter nominating Steve Lawson for our flowers, champagne and chocolates. "But Steve soldiered on and was nice to everyone." The work of an exams officer goes on all year with GCSE resits, end of module tests, AS levels, GNVQs and the new key skills tests. Steve also juggles teaching maths with tutoring a sixth-form group and gets just 50 minutes a week non-teaching time in recognition of his exam role.
