Funding clear up

19th February 2010 at 00:00

"Nurseries still face 'devastating cuts' despite delay to funding change" (February 12) failed to make clear that there is no reduction in Government funding of free childcare. In fact, we have made more funding available as the free entitlement for three- and four-year-olds increases from 12.5 to 15 hours a week by September. By law, every three- and four-year-old is entitled to a free part-time nursery place and authorities have a duty to ensure there are sufficient places available. It is not the intention of the early-years single funding formula to jeopardise the sustainability of maintained nursery schools or to enable private nurseries to make large profits.

Dawn Primarolo, Minister of state for children, young people and families.
