In The Brugan by Stephen Moore (Hodder Children's Books pound;3.99), a novel for older primary readers, Sarah struggles to accept her father's death and her mother's new romantic attachment.

They start a new life in a country cottage with "Fat Finley" - whom Sarah hate. Finley's attempts to adapt the cottage leads him to block an ancient gateway into faerie land.

Enter the Brugen to exact the faeries' revenge - but only Sarah is in touch with the magic - everybody else thinks she is just deranged in her bereavement.
