CHINA. By Trevor Higginbottom and Tony White. Heinemann Country Studies, pound;6.99.

This is a useful addition to Heinemann's colourful Country Studies. After an outline of China's physical attributes, the author takes a fairly upbeat view of the country's prospects, though areas of conflict are discussed.

The layout is inviting, with plenty of maps, diagrams and pitures. "Activity" panels are optimistic, inviting pupils to find solutions to Beijing's traffic problems on the basis of a map, a picture, and a bit of text.

The language makes no assumptions about earlier learning. The book will thus be accessible for almost the entire 14-16 range, though abler pupils might need supplementary sources.
