Get away to... France's backwaters

Lagrange Holidays, which offers holiday homes and hotels in more than 100 resorts around France, is encouraging visitors to sample less obvious areas of the country. For example, the cost of May half-term at Hourtin Port, near Bordeaux, starts from pound;89 per person based on four sharing a one-bedroom apartment, self-drive, and a return ferry crossing. Use it as a base to taste unusual farm-grown products in the village of Sadirac (www.ohlegumesoublies.com).

In Normandy, the Chroniques Nomades, Honfleur's exhibition of travel and adventure photography, runs until the beginning of June (www.chroniquesnomades.com). Lagrange offers a luxury self-catering apartment in the Villa Gardenia at Deauville, near Honfleur, with an indoor heated pool, gym, sauna and steam room, from pound;132 per person for half-term week, based on six sharing a two-bed apartment, self-drive and a return ferry crossing.
