Glasgow strike overjob losses
Members returned an 82 per cent vote in support of industrial action. The result was 2,620 against 556 out of a Glasgow school membership of some 4,000.
An anticipated loss of 300 teacher posts coupled with budget cuts of 16 per cent over two years means Glasgow schools face serious problems in implementing the 5-14 programme and Higher Still reforms, according to the union. Bob Gray, senior vice-chairman of the city's education committee, said he could understand teachers' feelings.
But Mr Gray said that to do nothing about the council's financial situation was not an option. He hoped any redundancies that were necessary would not be compulsory.
