Lloyd Ansell welcomes a new reference manual for designers

New Design - a recently launched bi-monthly magazine - offers articles on industrial and product design in a clean, sleek and fresh format. It is simple and easy to read, making it accessible to a broad range of readers.

An interesting array of products is featured and the articles offer thought-provoking perspectives and avoid being gimmicky. Although there are product-led features, issues such as sustainability, new materials and emerging markets are covered.

For Damp;T teachers, New Design not only offers general interest value but is a genuine class resource. If you show it to your students, I feel confident that they will get a lot of inspiration from it. It will help them source ideas and contacts, give them insight into what design students are up to and allow them to see what courses are available.

New Design addresses its subject as a serious issue for business and design savvy. And the distinction between ads and articles is clear, which cannot be said for some other leading design magazines.

In the back of one issue I found 12 photographs of London cyclelane markings, each distinctly different from the other. It is this sort of quirky detail that makes New Design worth a look. For me, it's the new reference manual for designers and design educators.

New Design usually costs pound;65 for an annual subscription but TES readers in the UK can receive a 60 per cent discount by logging on to the magazine website at You can also tel: 01858 438836 and quote the offer code TES1.
