Gong clanger

20th July 2001 at 01:00
Confusion at The TES office this week over the following email from a LEA adviser (who shall remain nameless):"I have been asked by a governor of a school to find further information about the GONG award scheme as the chair of governors of this school wishes to nominate the long-serving head ... A few weeks ago, in The TES there was a feature about the GONG awards and I wondered if you could give me a contact number and name..."

She might have been referring to an article in our June 22 issue about the Queen's birthday honours list, which referred colloquially to KBEs, CBEs, OBEs and MBEs as "gongs" in a headline. In which case, the school needs to contact either Number 10 or the Cabinet Office.

We suggest that the governors do not refer to Her Majesty's honours as"GONG awards" in their nomination.
