As good as it gets

"This is as good a Higher as I've seen," said Steven McGuckin, principal teacher at Larbert High, near Falkirk.

He felt it was clear enough for less able pupils, but gave more able pupils scope to impress. "We sometimes have complaints when papers are a little bit too straightforward, so they can't really show what they know," he said. "This year it gave the kids exactly what they were looking for."

One effective question asked candidates to outline a training programme and how to improve fitness, while another required a demonstration of how to improve a particular sporting skill.

Mr McGuckin was also happy with the Intermediate 2 exam, which he thought an improvement on last year's "very, very difficult" exam, when the questions were not easy to understand.
