Excessive testing and assessment scare children off the sciences, says the Royal Society. Professor Michael Reiss, its director of education, said science teachers were narrowing lessons to prepare pupils for tests, rather than engaging them with the excitement of physics, chemistry and biology. He was due to explore the issue in the University of Nottingham's Valentine's Day lecture.
