As suspenseful as any Hollywood thriller, Spellbound is an engaging documentary that follows eight young hopefuls as they bid to become the United States' National Spelling Bee champion (Friday magazine, September 26, 2003). In between the nail-bitingly tense rounds of the competition, director Jeff Blitz examines the backgrounds and study methods of the competitors, including Angela, born to Mexican parents who speak almost no English, and April, who reads her dictionary for eight hours a day.
