Just a year after joining her neighbour at adult education classes, Gwen Wildgoose has gained her first qualification - at the age of 82.
Gwen, described as a model student by her tutor, is now considering moving a step closer towards taking on a GCSE after being awarded her first certificate for learning.
Tutor Alan Wilson, who taught Gwen English and maths at a Sheffield college community education class, said: "When she told me she had never passed a test in her life I was amazed. She is a very good student.
"She is very thorough, always does her homework and is very supportive of the other students. I see no reason why she couldn't take her education further."
Gwen, who missed much of her schooling through ill-health, said: "I enjoy this course so much that I hate the holidays because there is no class. I take my homework with me!"
She worked as a sewing machinist and then in a shop, where she acquired a knack for mental arithmetic.
Gwen and her husband have four children, three grandchildren and two great-grand children.
