GTC man on pound;1,000 jaunt

England's General Teaching Council is paying almost pound;1,000 to send a representative to a conference in Australia - even though its Welsh counterpart has vetoed the trip for being too expensive.

Sir Alan Meyrick, registrar of England's GTC, will make the trip to the International Teaching Councils Conference in March.

The General Teaching Council for Wales declined its invitation because it did not want to upset teachers and has no policy on international travel.
