Hail Barry

17th May 1996 at 01:00
Noel Barry, press secretary to Cardinal Thomas Winning and scourge of all opposed to Catholic schools, has been promoted. Despite Barry's influential PR role, he was a mere curate. Now he has been made up to parish priest at St Joseph's Church, Milngavie.

Those who think that his new responsibilities will give him less time for education are apparently mistaken. Not only does a parish priest have right of access to and religious examination within his local Catholic schools, he is also the man who says whether a candidate for a teaching post has the blessing of Mother Church.

Our Man in the Pews notes that being PP is a step on the road to a bishopric.
