I read with concern the advice that new heads should always be available and the suggestion that their learning and development should take a back seat.
As a relatively new head I am aware I need to prioritise my own development as this benefits the development of the whole school.
The time to reflect on and review situations in school reduces the need for off -the-cuff or ill-considered decisions.
At a time when there are decreasing numbers wishing to become heads and - due to baby boomers retiring - an ever- increasing need for them, this advice would surely put off potential headteachers.
