Still with the primary heads, Matthew MacIver, registrar of the General Teaching Council for Scotland, won many friends for passionate views about the direction of the profession.

"We would have given him a standing ovation, only we're so old we couldn't get up in time," quipped one ageing pundit.

MacIver confirmed that many of the teachers signed up for chartered status are in fact in their late 40s and 50s. "So it's CPD for Saga," retorted another.
