Whether Maire Whitehead defeats Labour's Lord (Mike) Watson in Cathcart or not seems a trifle irrelevant following the SNP's slate of candidates for the Scottish parliament. Party voters have placed her fifth on the Glasgow list, making her a virtual certainty to sneak a proportional seat, even if Watson wins the local seat.

Whitehead is well known to TES Scotland readers as head of St Mirin's primary and the most outspoken senior member of the Association of Head Teachers in Scotland. There is little on which she has no opinion.

Two SNP teachers unlikely to become Glasgow MSPs are Kaukab Stewart and Gavin Roberts, the latter a persistent thorn to the Educational Institute of Scotland leadership.
