Here's to tip-top trips
The revelation that three-quarters of teachers think school trips are fun may be the best news of the week. Several well-publicised tragedies left teachers fearing that taking pupils off the premises might land them in court, but that concern appears to have diminished thanks, perhaps, to official reassurances.
As our educational visits special (TES magazine) shows, nothing beats getting out of school for bringing learning to life and enlarging children's horizons. Trips can be motivating, especially in schools that rely on fundraising rather than the Bank of Mum and Dad for payments which may be beyond some family budgets. Teachers and kids can get to know each other better and, er, have fun together. Just don't tell Ofsted.
