Herts to expand with music;Letter

12th February 1999 at 00:00
IT IS good that the initiative from the Department for Education and Employment for music education funds (TES, January 22) has been broadly welcomed. It has provided renewed spirit in music services.

However, the figures for Hertfordshire's music budget are incorrect. The service made savings between 1997 and 1998, but the budget for the forthcoming year is not yet known. Like many LEAs we are awaiting the outcome of our DFEE submission and have plans to expand, rather than contract.

My remarks about funding were actually made last November. At that time I was concerned to ensure that access and entitlement to high-quality provision were supported by reasonable levels of public funding. I am sure my colleagues in other LEAs would agree.
