Higher goal

Former BBC director general Sir Michael Checkland has pledged to increase participation in higher education.

Writing as new chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Sir Michael said: "Our research shows that low-income families from poorer neighbourhoods still have a very poor chance of getting into higher education. This is unacceptable. We shall work with colleagues in further education and the schools to tackle this problem."
