Former BBC director general Sir Michael Checkland has pledged to increase participation in higher education.

Writing as new chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Sir Michael said: "Our research shows that low-income families from poorer neighbourhoods still have a very poor chance of getting into higher education. This is unacceptable. We shall work with colleagues in further education and the schools to tackle this problem."
