Few students study Ancient Greece, but they might compare the comparatively sedate Olympic Games to the brutal gladiatorial sports of the Romans. Students from the upper end of KS3 could use the Olympics as a vehicle for studying the many facets of 20th-century peace and co-operation alongside prejudice and conflict. At GCSE and ASA2 the Olympics provide excellent contexts for studying political conflict. Students at GCSE level might try to reconstruct the thoughts of a Jew in Germany in 1936 against the face being presented to the wider world through the Berlin Olympics. At ASA2 students will enjoy comparing and contrasting the western and Soviet boycotts of the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.
