Renfrewshire has been chosen to host next year's Scottish National Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27, 2009.

The decision, announced by Alex Salmond, the First Minister, recognises the authority's achievements in recent years in increasing awareness, particularly in local schools, of the Holocaust.

Last year, a group of senior pupils from Renfrewshire visited Auschwitz to learn about the persecution of Jews by the Nazis during the Second World War; in January, they led a Holocaust Memorial ceremony in front of hundreds of other pupils in Paisley Town Hall. Holocaust survivor Eva Clark has also visited a number of schools in the authority to talk about her experiences.

The authority will host a number of events and initiatives leading up to Holocaust Memorial Day next year.
