Michael Moore, the new Liberal Democrat man in Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale, had a light duty to perform on Monday when he turned up for the ceremony to mark the agreement between Borders College and Napier University.

It was not, however, his first public task as the new MP. Perhaps it was not even the most important: on Sunday he had to make an appearance at the Galashiels Liberal Club bingo night.
