RE amp; media - what does faith mean to you?

When Amna Aslam set out to make a three-minute film on "what your faith means to you", the 14-year-old schoolgirl had only one aim in mind: to correct what she felt were the many misconceptions about her religion, Islam.

But the pupil from Hollins Technology College in Accrington produced such a powerful visual collage with her 25 classmates that it has won a global short film competition.

Amna's film, Muhammad in Accrington ... Inspiring Me - which features classmates holding placards bearing the words strength, inspiration and compassion - won the action section of the Faith Shorts contest, a global short film competition run by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. The foundation flew all the winners to London for an awards ceremony on 6 December.

"I felt the need to reiterate the positive things about Islam in the face of so many misconceptions," Amna said. "It was a thrill to win." Other winners were Paulo Reyes, 18, a Christian from Manila in the Philippines, who produced a short on a ten-year-old boy with a terminal illness who was comforted by his faith, and Nadim Merrikh, 15, from Ontario, of the Baha'i faith, who won the musical category with his short Be the Change You Want to See and was the overall winner.

The films, with nine others, have been added to the TES Resources website. Use these moving films to promote classroom discussion and tell us what you think.
