Take part in three-week workshadowing exchange visits with a German colleague at any time during the German academic year; your partner visits you in the autumn. Funding is available for UK institutions to host German visitors and possibly for travel to Germany. Teachers of German should contact the Ministry of Education first. Applications should be submitted to the Central Bureau for Educational Visits by September.

A new nationwide award scheme to encourage good practice and innovation in language teaching and writing has been launched, backed by the Department for Education and Employment. Organised by the Centre for Information Teaching and Reserach (CILT), it is open to schools, colleges and universities. Winners of the Europe-wide pilot included a school which created its own Eurovillage and another which encouraged pupils to write, produce and direct their own plays in three languags. To win one of the 12 places, candidates must submit, by April 26, a printed 1,200-word letter in German addressed to a fictitious family. It should include information about their family, interests, future plans, local town and what they expect from the trip, and should be accompanied by a letter of endorsement from their teacher, a photograph and parents' declaration of consent.
