It pays to check who's paying

CAN'T PAY, WON'T PAY - so ask who's footing the travel bill?

As many teachers will be travelling to interviews in the forthcoming term I pass on the following reminder: that reimbursement of travelling expenses is not always automatic.

I was informed by Leyton Sixth Form College that they would not after all be able to pay the pound;151 which it cost me to travel from the Lake District to London first thing on a Friday morning in order to make their interview.

They told me that their literature did state that they did't pay - but unfortunately, as the interview had been arranged at very short notice over the phone, this pertinent information did not actually get to me until I had finished the interview.

Had I known, of course, that they could not afford to pay

I would not have attended the interview.

And once I knew that Leyton Sixth Form College were not willing to pay I was thankful not to have got a job with such an impoverished organisation.
