Josephine Waltz

Four years ago Josephine Waltz, who teaches in New Jersey, urged her Year 6 pupils to collect recipes from their favourite authors in support of a literacy centre in Vermont. Some busy writers took more than a year to get cooking, and some never will. American author EL Konigsburg says that she, at least, has "developed a bad attitude towards the kitchen", but her recipe for "Betty Ellovich's Mother-in-Law's Lokschen Kugel" sounds like a story in itself. Meanwhile, Eoin Colfer reveals the secret of the best pepperoni pizza in County Wexford (Rebetino's pizza parlour). Jamie Oliver would be proud of some of the UK contributions: try Philip Pullman's chicken with pancetta followed by Anne Fine's toasted grapes and cream, or Eva Ibbotson's Sacher torte. Recipes and thoughts on writing from more than 50 authors are collected in Write Out of the Oven! (Teachers College Press Harcourt Education, pound;12.99).
