LA shooting victim

UNITED STATES: Teacher Alfredo Perez, critically ill after being hit in the head by a stray bullet from a gang shooting, has begun to talk and is starting to recover slowly, doctors have said.

The wounding of 30-year-old Mr Perez, as he sat with a group of fifth-graders in a first-floor library in south central Los Angeles, drew worldwide attention. Both Pope John Paul II and President Bill Clinton sent their best wishes. It has renewed concerns about violence in schools, which have tried to remain safe havens amid urban war zones.
