Lanark no more

18th September 1998 at 01:00
Positively the last word on Lanarkshire, which Liddell partially represents. The last meeting of North Lanarkshire's education committee was invited to support the bid by Bell College, Hamilton (in neighbouring South Lanarkshire, as it happens) to become a university.

It duly did so. Councillor Tommy Morgan, in the manner becoming a Glasgow University graduate who also happens to bear the name of one of Scotland's most revered music hall comics, quipped: "Next thing you know, we'll be bidding to have Scotland's first Listdee University."

And why not. The council's motto, after all, is "Aiming Higher in North Lanarkshire!"
