The Learning and Skills Council received its first annual grant letter this week. Of its pound;5.5 billion grant, pound;2,384 million will be used to increase participation of young people in education, training or work.

More than pound;2.5m will help to increas adult learners, pound;435m will be used as capital and help to promote specialist colleges, and pound;188m will meet the council's running costs. This represents a saving of more than pound;50m against the costs of the council's predecessor organisations.
