Leeds United football players yesterday helped to launch a scheme to encourage children to read.

The scheme, believed to be the first to involve a major football club, was launched by Leeds council and he players at the city's central libraries. It will involve an interactive website, games and competitions for children in reading and writing, and activities led by players such as Lucas Radebe.
