Let's be fair

12th March 2010 at 00:00

Your article on the General Teaching Council and competency referrals ("Incompetent staff go free as heads judge GTC pointless", February 26) quoted me as saying the report was damning for the council.

Just to clarify: we have no evidence that the GTC's disciplinary processes are anything other than fair. We have plenty of evidence that unacceptable demands on teachers can lead to a collapse in morale and confidence. Those teachers will carry with them an unwarranted sense of failure for the rest of their lives.
