Headteachers, teachers and primary curriculum experts say that the Key Stage 1 spelling test was particularly hard this year ( TES June 1). A Qualifications and Curriculum Authority spokesman says that the words were no more difficult than those in the previous year. The only way to decide which version is correct is for the QCA to publish the level of difficulty indices, calculated from student scores, for the words used in 2000 and 2001.
