Letters extra : Qualified to 'teach' full classes?

9th March 2001 at 00:00

The Devon Teaching Assistant (Letters extra TES 16.2.01) sounds like a gem and I commend her for the extra work she does. However, I too, am a qualified and conscientious Teaching Assistant but there is no way my school would allow me to 'teach' full classes. Teaching assistants are not qualified or insured for this and can only 'caretake' the class briefly if an emergency arises. If our role is to be recognised and valued then taking on these extra tasks for the low pay we currently receive is not helping those of us who wish to further our particular professional role in the classroom.
