Letters extra: In search of the obvious

MPs on the Commons Education and Employment Select Committee want a government inquiry into the reasons for the "low recruitment of men" into childcare ("Drive to recruit male role models" TES 30 March).

The childcare profession doesn't need an inquiry to know why so few mean want to work in the early years sector. They are put off by the low salaries and the lack of a career structure - as are many women.

The government must address these issue if it is to recruit more childcarers into the profession, and offer a better deal for the current childcare workforce PANN will continue to campaign for a proper career ladder and better pay.

PANN acknowledges the shortage of men in childcare and supports moves to improve the situation.
