Letters Extra : Too much too soon?

25th June 2004 at 01:00
Inbsp;read with interest the Primary Forum article (June 11 issue) titled "Too much pressure, not enough care", which highlighted the problems associated with introducing children to formal learning too early.

I work for CCEA - the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment. CCEA advises the Government on what should be taught in Northern Ireland schools and colleges, monitors standards and awards qualifications.

We have been pioneering a new approach to Early Years Education and have proposed that Northern Ireland children should begin their education with a new 'Enriched Curriculum' - a less formal approach to learning.

We are currently piloting this approach in a number of schools throughout Northern Ireland and feedback to date has been very encouraging.
