CHOOSING TEXTS FOR THE NATIONAL LITERACY STRATEGY. By Ann Lazim and Sue Ellis. Centre for Language in Primary Education (CLPE). pound;18.50.

This booklist sets out to help teachers choose texts for the literacy hour. The list is organised into the genre and topic categories specified for each year group in the national literacy strategy's Framework for Teaching.

It draws on the texts suggested in a previous CLPE publication, The Core Booklist, with additional titles for particular categories.

Readers familiar with that publication will find this awelcome addition. But new readers may consider it an expensive booklist with little information beyond publication details.

There is guidance on books suitable for shared and guided reading. Core book titles are also matched to the stages of reading development using the CLPE reading scales for key stages1 and 2. The booklist does provide a useful reference, but should be considered alongside others such as the Reading Recovery Book Bands and Puffin's free book lists.
