It's a phrase on everybody's lips and educational publishers have been speedy to pick up on the opportunities presented to them by the Government's latest demands on teachers. Thrass has produced a 'word level framework for literacy hour' which the company claims 'is a whole-school programme for teaching children, of any age, about the building blocks of reading and spelling'.

Class-size picture charts and grapheme charts are part of the range available, along with resource files, overwrite charts, interactive CDs, tapes, dictionaries and workbooks. The resource file is priced pound;100, a class-size grapheme chart is priced pound;20, a letter formation workbook, pound;1.50.

A amp; C Black has developed a range of photocopiable word-level activity books to cover the National Literacy Strategy Framework of Objectives from Reception to Year 6. Books for Years 1 and 3 are available next month and books for Reception and Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 will be available in September, priced pound;14.99 each.

The Scholastic Literacy Teaching Resources catalogue contains six sections: Literacy Centres for five to 11 year olds, Literacy Skills Phonics for five to seven year olds, Literacy Skills Spelling for seven to 11 year olds, Writing Workshops for five to 11 year olds, Read and Respond for seven to 11 year olds and Learning through Literacy for five to seven year olds. Each set comes in a display case and there are audio cassettes and teacher's resource books to facilitate group reading and satisfy the require-ments of literacy hour. A Literacy Centre box of guided group reading for four to six year olds, contains three copies each of six titles and is priced pound;120.
