Literacy - Sweet spell of success

5th November 2010 at 00:00

The UK-wide "spelling bee" is again seeking entries, with Scottish heats to be held in March.

Teams for the event, organised by The Times newspaper with support from Microsoft Office, should comprise pupils who turn 12 between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011.

Entrants can practise with free puzzles and games on the spelling bee website. They should be registered by December 10.

The entire process from heats to final will be adjudicated by Collins Dictionaries. The final takes place in June, and the winning team will guest-edit Young Times.

It will be the third time the annual event has been held. Last year 1,000 schools entered from around the UK. Some of the most difficult words proved to be "pneumatic", "asthma" and "incandescent".
