The release of Toy Story2 is an excuse to check out Buzz Lightyear's appearance in Reel Lives, a video compilation with literacy teaching ideas, reviewed in The TES on March 5, 1999, and now recommended by Jacqui Harrett, senior lecturer in primary English education at the University of Wales. Free with pound;3.50 pamp;p from British Video Association, co DD Video, Unit 1, Pool and Business Park, High Street, Tarvin, Chester CH3 8JH Tel: 01829 741490.

"Every school should have this. Although the teacing ideas are designed for use at key stage 2, I have used it at key stage 1 to focus on characterisation and direct speech. Buzz was compared with a child starting a new school, with the video demonstrating how young children can analyse and empathise. Reel Lives has helped make trainee teachers aware of the possibilities of using media as a comple-mentary form of literacy."

We pay pound;40 for each one used. Write to Love it, TES Friday, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1W 1BX
