Finally to an intimate gathering in Glasgow's Post House Hotel for the first meeting of the Education Minister's languages action group, presided over with benign good humour by "Monsieur" John Mulgrew, East Ayrshire's director of education.

On being told, "You'll find lunch on the ground floor", Mulgrew quipped: "I hope not."
