Meanwhile, in Washington ... 241 school staff sacked in one go

3rd September 2010 at 01:00

The row in Los Angeles comes after the Washington DC schools chancellor fired 241 teachers at the same time, as The TES reported last month. Michelle Rhee (right) sacked 165 staff in July after a new assessment scheme revealed they did not meet a new set of standards. A further 76 were sacked for not being properly qualified. The 'Impact' scheme introduced by Ms Rhee links the performance of some maths and English teachers to their pupils' test scores.
