Education Secretary David Blunkett launched the pound;48 million Millennium Volunteers programme yesterday to encourage 16 to 24-year-olds to take part. Organisations are invited to bid for cash for projects to expand volunteering among young people so they can gain one of two awards: the Millennium Volunteers Award of Excellence, signed by Mr Blunkett, or an MV certificate. Activities could include helping primary school children to read, or coaching in sport and the arts.

The first bidding round is now open and a second will begin in June.
