Mixed ability

29th June 2007 at 01:00
Alan Lafferty, the new education leader (sorry, Cabinet Convener for Education and Equalities) on East Renfrewshire Council, wasted no time in calling the class to order at the first meeting of the council's post-election education committee.

The former Tory heartland is now run by a stunning coalition of Labour, the SNP, Liberal Democrats and independents.

"This is a mixed ability class," Labour's Mr Lafferty told the mix of new and experienced councillors, "and my job is to make sure you behave." Let's hope he doesn't have to resort to setting or streaming.
