But do the foody guidelines apply to teachers? The story goes of one highly respected teacher on a strict injunction from his weight-conscious wife never to touch the potato wedges served daily in the school canteen.

And so it came to pass that the good lady arrived to pay a special visit around lunchtime. The honest eater, apparently on a regime of apples and salads, duly approached the servery with his domestic adviser.

"Same as usual, Chipper?" asked the assistant.
