The chief executive of the Qualifications and Curriculum Council says: "I make extensive use of my PC to write all my speeches and articles, to send e-mail and to access the QCA intranet and the Internet.

"But my chief reource continues to be my fountain pen: to annotate large numbers of documents and proofs, to write countless aides-memoire, to sign letters and to send personal letters of congratulations and thanks."
